I loved this book. I couldn't stop reading....Donna Glee writes in such beautifu,l rich language, as though every word is chosen so carefully. Each word seems to convey so much meaning. The plot was not what I expected at all, and the ending was happy. I particularly enjoyed that the Dreamer, the main protagonist, became empowered, took her life in her own hands and decided to make something of herself, despite the "powers that be" who wanted to keep her silent and subservient, so that they could maintain the status quo. I love having a young, strong female protagonist who "saves the day". As a beginning weaver, I really enjoyed the references to weaving that were throughout the story. Bravo!! I can't wait for the next novel by Donna Glee Williams!Product details

After twining a world in her first novel, The Braided Path, that is different from any other yet totally believable, even to the extent that everyone in it is kind, Donna Glee has woven another with Dreamers in which the strands of evil are revealed as gradually as rebellion is awakened. I love the way she lets us get to know the characters by building the story from many different points of view, from threads of conversation that build gradually into an ending that is right - but oh, so shocking.
This novel is lyrically written, the unusual setting is well depicted, and the protagonists are very engaging. (And the villains are very villainous while still being realistic.) The suspense builds nicely and scenes and images have stayed with me. Lovely.
Donna Glee Williams writes fairy tales without fairies. She's creating a distinctive voice in feminist fantasy in which there's no magic or supernatural beings. The magic comes from the richness of her imagined worlds - pre-industrial civilizations with their own peculiar geographies, rituals and mythologies.
In her first novel, "The Braided Path," the world in question was a loose confederation of indigenous villages arrayed up and down the side of an immense cliff. In her new novel, "Dreamers," it's a feudal desert oasis ruled, not by princes or dukes, but by a council of dream interpreters. They, in turn, watch over an oracular maiden whose nightly dreams are recorded and used as raw material for decisions of state. It's a stable system - except for the young women themselves, the Dreamers. Each takes the dreams of the whole village on her shoulders, and is tossed aside as soon as she crumbles under the burden, to make way for the next unwitting victim.
You'd expect a novel about dreams to be rich in Jungian archetypes, and they're not hard to pick out - like a weaver or a water-bearer who turns out to be an incognito prince. The Dreamer herself has had her name and most of her personal history erased, and though she works side by side with villagers, they treat her as deferentially as a demi-goddess. Her encounters with the water-bearer will change both of their destinies, as well as that of the whole village.
There's magic, too, in the understated poetry of the writing. "Awe is not the same as fear; young Scribes need to know this. Awe keeps you awake in the presences of the mystery, alert and ready through the long hours in the dark, your pen in hand, listening hard listening to the breathing of the Dreamer, the rustling of the bedclothes as she turns in bed, the quality of her tossing, the subtle changes in all these sounds as she rises towards wakefulness and speech."
Passages like made me feel comfortably at home in Williams' imagined world. I look forward to visiting the next world in which her imagination will serve as tour guide.
As a teacher, I highly recommend Donna Glee Williams' well-crafted YA novels. My students who read Williams' allegorical novel The Braided Path (and loved it) eagerly anticipated the release of her novel Dreamers, and, despite the fact that the book was made available on just today, they are already reading it and giving it enthusiastic reviews! While format is preferred by some, several have expressed that they would like a hard copy of the book, so we hope those are forthcoming.
This story is wonderfully imagined and has very engaging characters. I was rooting for the protagonists from the start. The dreams are so wonderfully imagined that they could be a book unto themselves. The dreams are so vividly described, but have that surreal quality and are so packed with symbolism that I pause in my reading after many of them to savor the images.
Donna Glee Williams has a gentle yet immensely powerful way of delivering her stories. Dreamers is no exception. I’m immediately almost hypnotized as she draws me into her tale, one well crafted sentence at a time. Sometimes reminiscent of Ursula LeGuin, but with her own unique style, Williams is an author to watch out for. Her characters, prose, and intriguing plots make her an up and coming star.
Outstanding. Dreamers presents an in-depth culture, immersive and full of slowly revealed treachery. Set in a desert world where water is life, a young teenage girl is kept as a figurehead of a religion that circles around the Dreams of the Dreamer - and by these dreams and their symbols the wealthy manage to remain wealthy, the poor impoverished and the resources allocated for advantage and disadvantage as the ruling council of men decide. Dreamers are merely vessels and the Interpreters of the Dreams, well, they seem to hold all the power for themselves. The slightest human failing or natural desire in the Dreamer can be seen as a threat, and soon, another Dreamer may have to emerge if the current one isn't cooperative... Donna Glee Williams's steadily unwinding tale drew me in and held me, building empathy for her characters and suspense as to their fates. I highly recommend this book.
